Reservations…

Once again the issue of reservations in the premier educational institutes of the country has raised its head…
The reservations in UG and PG level institutes don’t make much sense… wont it be better to make this provision in the primary stages of education itself so that after schooling, all are at similar competence level thus making it possible for the best from across the country, irrespective of their caste, to reach the premier institutes…? As of now, the competition is unfair… and no one is unaware of the gross misuse of the quota system to secure admission by individuals…

After 50+ years of independence why do we still need reservations at all…? and if we do, then why on the basis of caste, and not on the basis of economic disparity…?
Making reservations on any basis, like caste or religion, divides the country by deepening the rift between the various sects of society… the only relevant issue should be the financial status of people… there are scenarios when people from SC/ST/OBC sects are not financially incapable and their kid might not be the best, but due to quota they get selected… whereas people who are incapable of supporting their child’s education end up loosing a good chance to make their kid’s future coz of quotas… so isn’t financial basis more logical…? Agreed drawing the line between those who will deserve reservation and who wont in this case can be an issue (though a smaller one that deciding which all castes, religion or sects of the society to be included or not!)… And people will find a way to circumvent this as well… but nevertheless, it’ll be fair atleast…
The basic purpose of quotas in institutes should be to support and further those who have no other means… not a political issue used by various parties to pick votes by trying to appease certain sects, thus leading to segregation of the people of this country which end up taking the form of riots (Mandal Commission of 1990 isn’t all that old and just validates my point)…

The system of reservations , whichever the sector of implementation is redundant. It should be a purely merit based system. If they really want to help people of the weaker sections of society , they should provide financial aid to those who are actually eligible or those who qualify.Reservations on the basis of caste etc are a simple violition of our supposed "equality" in society.
